PASS Requirements

Goal: The ultimate goal of the Path to Academic Success is to help students make the transition from needing external supports to personally evaluating, motivating, and taking responsibility for their own unique academic needs. In this way, the university fosters the development of the highest level of personal growth and academic potential.

Components: The Path to Academic Success utilizes the following components to assist students in developing the skills necessary for success at the college level

  • First Semester: Students will be placed in special sections of E105 Writing Skills, PD110 College Reading & Study Skills, and M100 Elementary Mathematical Ideas, and PD116 Strategies for Success, each with a maximum enrollment of 15 students.
  • The Second Semester: In addition to a full class load (15-16 cr.), students will register for PD111 Study & Reading Strategies1 cr.). PD111 will provide assistance with monitoring and assessing the learning strategies employed in each academic course.
  • Regular Consultation with the Program Director: Students will be scheduled for regular consultation with the director to discuss academic progress in each of their classes, analyze study habits, review academic progress reports, assist with frustrations and celebrate successes. Meetings may also provide an opportunity for scheduling assistance, career guidance, and referral to university resources which will best address the student’s concerns. In addition to regularly scheduled meetings, students may meet with the director at other times as needed.
  • Tutorial Assistance Tutoring is available for most academic courses. Students will be advised to use tutoring assistance when needed.

Profile of a PASS StudentThe Path to Academic Success is a one-year program designed for students who:
-Have an average composite ACT score of 17 to 19
-Have a high school grade point average of 2.25 in college prep courses
-Have a willingness to seek and accept assistance
-Recognize that they did not rise to their full potential in high school and are ready to expend extra effort to achieve academic success.

Students who fail to meet the minimum requirements for admission to Saint Mary's University will be re-evaluated for provisional acceptance and assignment to the PASS program as a condition of their admission.

Enrollment in the program is limited. Students identified in the admission process as needing the opportunities and services of PASS may be assigned to the program.PASS students are required to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.000 by the end of the first academic year. Students whose GPA is below the required 2.000 will be dismissed from the university. In accordance with Saint Mary's University policy, any student who has been dismissed for low scholarship may appeal to the Academic Standing Committee for reinstatement after an interval of one semester.

Fee: A fee of $2000 ($1500 semester I, $500 semester II) is assessed to students who participate in PASS.

LCT 140 Course Descriptions

Saints and Sinners
We will explore the theme of ‘saints and sinners’ via the wisdom that comes from life’s worst pain and transgressions. Through Saint Augustine’s Confessions, Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, and samplings of other great lives and works, we will examine the redemption, compassion, and faith born of great darkness, including the need to embrace our brokenness in order to tap into the obvious and hidden treasures in our lives.

Tattoos on the Heart (Boyle)
Creating and solidifying one’s identity is an essential step on the road to adulthood. For some young people, gang membership with its accompanying signs, symbols and territories is the only road available. Exposure to a new world order characterized by “boundless compassion” provides an opportunity for reflection and change. These sections of LCT140 explore the power of personal transformation for oneself and one’s community. Students will explore personal identity, transition and transformation as we consider together what it means to be a Lasallian scholar in our Saint Mary’s University community.

Autobiography
Students will read the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, one of the most famous and influential Americans that ever lived. They will enter into the mind of a person who ran away from home at seventeen and struggled with many of the same essential decisions that they themselves face at this transitional stage in their lives. This scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, renaissance man, pokes fun at himself and reveals his own shortcomings as he offers practical advice to his readers. Students are challenged to reflect upon their own life-choices, and to think seriously about the accomplishments they will include in their own autobiographies.

Seeking the American Dream
Americans over our history have been motivated by the search for a better life, the fulfillment of the “American Dream.” Students in this section will examine the various meaning associated with this idea and some of the ways that we pursue it as individuals and as a society. We give special attention to our immigration stories, the pursuit of opportunity by way of education, the possibilities of economic and social mobility, and the significance we attach to home ownership and developing a sense of belonging in a place. The seminar content reflects the Lasallian emphasis on preparing individuals to be contributors in the economy and civil society. Students interested in the social sciences, education or business may find this topic especially interesting.

The Inklings: Lewis, Tolkien, and Williams
This course will focus on the issues of identity, and transition to college through critical readings of C.S. Lewis' Perelandra, J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit, and Charles Williams' Many Dimensions. Besides reading these novels, the course will also focus on the intellectual companionship between these three authors who met to collaborate and critique each other’s works (and still remained friends!)

“Who Moved My Cheese?” Change in our lives, and women’s influences in a changing society
Using the popular modern parable “Who Moved My Cheese?” written by Spencer Johnson, MD, this course will help students recognize the changes we face in our lives and how change promotes growth. Focusing on the female perspective, we will examine how to move from reacting-to-change in our lives towards how-to-lead-change. Multiple resources will be used in this class including readings, artworks, discussion, theater and film. This class is a designated section for students of the Saint Teresa Institute, but non-Institute students are welcome.
