Components: The Path to Academic Success utilizes the following components to assist students in developing the skills necessary for success at the college level
- First Semester: Students will be placed in special sections of E105 Writing Skills, PD110 College Reading & Study Skills, and M100 Elementary Mathematical Ideas, and PD116 Strategies for Success, each with a maximum enrollment of 15 students.
- The Second Semester: In addition to a full class load (15-16 cr.), students will register for PD111 Study & Reading Strategies1 cr.). PD111 will provide assistance with monitoring and assessing the learning strategies employed in each academic course.
- Regular Consultation with the Program Director: Students will be scheduled for regular consultation with the director to discuss academic progress in each of their classes, analyze study habits, review academic progress reports, assist with frustrations and celebrate successes. Meetings may also provide an opportunity for scheduling assistance, career guidance, and referral to university resources which will best address the student’s concerns. In addition to regularly scheduled meetings, students may meet with the director at other times as needed.
- Tutorial Assistance Tutoring is available for most academic courses. Students will be advised to use tutoring assistance when needed.
Profile of a PASS StudentThe Path to Academic Success is a one-year program designed for students who:
-Have an average composite ACT score of 17 to 19
-Have a high school grade point average of 2.25 in college prep courses
-Have a willingness to seek and accept assistance
-Recognize that they did not rise to their full potential in high school and are ready to expend extra effort to achieve academic success.
Students who fail to meet the minimum requirements for admission to Saint Mary's University will be re-evaluated for provisional acceptance and assignment to the PASS program as a condition of their admission.
Enrollment in the program is limited. Students identified in the admission process as needing the opportunities and services of PASS may be assigned to the program.PASS students are required to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.000 by the end of the first academic year. Students whose GPA is below the required 2.000 will be dismissed from the university. In accordance with Saint Mary's University policy, any student who has been dismissed for low scholarship may appeal to the Academic Standing Committee for reinstatement after an interval of one semester.
Fee: A fee of $2000 ($1500 semester I, $500 semester II) is assessed to students who participate in PASS.
